In this study, we define as an objective to determine the preference of the students for history or for legends when they work evidence that is opposite to the version of the narrative transmitted by the popular memory. With this purpose, we conducted qualitative research with 83 students aged twelve to thirteen years about their narratives. For the analysis, we delimit categories related to the reading of sources, the obtaining of evidence, and the creation of discourses. The results show that a conflict between the evidence tends to be solved by the conservation of the legend. Thus, it is essential that students work on their historical thinking skills in order that emotional aspects do not falsify the image of the past
