This article discusses the traditional game of the stick, practiced in the parish of Bucos, municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. This game, of popular roots and strongly northern character, originated in an eminently rural society, served as an art of defence and attack, is now preserved by family and social dynamics as a mastery to be maintained from generation to generation. In Bucos, the possibility of recovering individual and family memories remains, going back to the 40s of the 20th century, despite the strong desertification as a result of successive migratory waves. It was possible to verify, through empirical work, that the memories of teachers and apprentices of the game of the stick allowed to maintain the union and family transmission. It is intended, then, to observe the importance of this tradition, intangible cultural heritage, at the level of its practitioners and how it relates to family dynamics in Bucos.
