Asthetitlesuggests,thepresentworkaimstoidentifyanddescribethedifferentstagesofgrammaticalizationcrossedbythediscursivemarkersafterandnow.Withthispurposeinmind,wewillestablishacomparisonbetweenthediscursivevaluesthatthesemarkersexhibitedbetweenthe13thandthe16thcenturiesandthediscursivevaluesthatconveyinContemporaryPortuguese.Fromthefirstlookatourcorpus,wehypothesizethatvalueslikecause-consequence,counter-expectation,orevenspatiallocation,identifiedforthesemarkersinthepresentcentury,arenotyetvisibleinthe13ththrough16thcenturies,containingmerelythefunctionofatemporaladverb.Therefore,wewillbeinterestedinprovingthishypothesisbyidentifyingandclassifyingtheexamplescollectedinlinewiththegrammaticalizationprinciplesproposedbyHopper(1987)andwiththegrammaticalizationmechanisms suggested, later, by Heine (2003).
