This article analyzes the presence of refugees in Portugal in the context of the Spanish civil war and the establishment of the Franco´s regime, facilitated by geographical proximity. Afraid of contact with the outside world, the Salazar´s regime developed a repression aimed at these refugees, considered undesirable, seeking to prevent them from settling definitively in the country. Crossing the memorialist work of Mateo Tuñón Albertos with other documental and bibliographic sources this article deals with the case of Mateo Tuñón Albertos, who arrived in Portugal after the civil war, which exemplifies the reality experienced by many refugees, and the difficulties they faced to survive and leave the country bound for Mexico
