Summary We present a case of failed tracheal intubation due to subglottic airway obstruction caused by a previously undetected cricoid chondrosarcoma in an asymptomatic patient. This presentation of chondrosarcoma has not previously been described and highlights the need for investigation where the cause of a failed tracheal intubation is not obvious. This case also demonstrates the need for careful airway management when complete visualisation of the glottis is not possible. We review the current literature and guidance for such events.
