Summary Deaths after intentional 2,4‐dinitrophenol (DNP) use have been rising over the last decade. Hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnoea and diaphoresis are pathognomonic features of DNP overdose. Fatalities are usually seen within 8 h to a few days after ingestion of DNP. However, symptoms such as rapidly increasing body temperature with cardiac arrest can occur earlier. Aggressive fluid resuscitation and controlling hyperthermia is the mainstay of treatment.
