Relevance. Competition, being a factor of socio-economic progress, improving the quality of goods and limiting price increases, also leads to the bankruptcy of inefficient economic entities. Preventing bankruptcy and ensuring the viability of mining operations in the face of increasing speed of change and increased competition are urgent challenges. Improving the productivity of mining employees is an important factor in ensuring their competitiveness. The purpose of the study is to disclose the concept of labor productivity and substantiate the need for its use in the economic mechanisms of managing mining enterprises. Methods of research. Methods of semantic analysis, structural and functional analysis, scientific generalization, production experiment were used. Results. The concept of labor productivity is the realization of the employee’s ability to produce useful products using his or her labor potential. The role of labor productivity in ensuring the competitiveness and viability of a mining enterprise (ME) is determined. The formula for calculating the labor productivity of ME is given. The market economic mechanism of managing ME divisions and the results of its application are presented. The necessity of developing this mechanism using the indicator “labor productivity” is substantiated. Conclusions. Labor productivity is an indicator that makes it possible to take into account the results of employees’ activities in terms of effective reproduction, timely adaptation and sustainable development of ME, as well as the costs of achieving them. The use of this indicator for the development of a market economic mechanism for managing the units of ME will increase the efficiency of using the labor potential of its personnel and, on this basis, ensure the necessary competitiveness and viability of the enterprise.
