Timely identification, analysis and adoption of appropriate decisions on how to manage a particular risk allows the organization to avoid crisis phenomena. The purpose of this article to consider the concept of risk and risk management process in the quality management system (QMS) at the Institute of mining UB RAS (IGD UrO RAS), as well as features of applying the concept of risk-based thinking in accordance with the new version of the international standards ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. Research methodology. The methods of risk management are studied and the practice of using risk-based thinking by a scientific organization whose activities are radically different from an industrial enterprise or financial organization is given. Understanding activity as a set of interrelated and interacting processes that function in an integrated system helps to achieve more stable results and advanced development. Research result. The experience of using international standards in organizing the activities of a scientific organization has shown that risk management helps to increase the efficiency of work, the responsibility of employees for obtaining the final result, and reduce losses from the implementation of risks. The proposed campaign organization of quality management in the institution of the Ministry of science and higher education of the Russian Federation and given the practice of its use in the mining Institute, Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. Conclusion. The introduction of risk-based thinking allows you to avoid repeating a risk event, and if it is impossible to eliminate it, keep the risk at an acceptable level for the Institute by making informed decisions. Predict the consequences of possible risk events and take measures to reduce their negative impact on the functioning of the Institute.
