A rubidium‐fixation method for the quantitative determination of vermiculite is described. The results obtained by this procedure were similar to, but more precise than, the results obtained by the conventional cation exchange procedures. The exchangeable Rb of a Rb‐saturated and heated sample is replaced by NH 4 and the remaining fixed Rb is determined directly by dissolving the sample. The vermiculite content is calculated from the fixed Rb content. The Rb‐fixation method is well suited for determining small changes of vermiculite content in soils.
