Collection of intact soil samples from below the surface by handdriven devices is difficult and time consuming. A simple technique is presented to prepare unencased‐intact soil cores collected with a hydraulic sampling probe for laboratory physical analyses. The methodology has been used to determine the hydraulic properties of samples collected as deep as 6 m in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The hydraulic conductivity results and dye leaching tests have indicated that boundary flow does not occur at the interface of the soil and paraffin coating. The procedure has many advantages over sampling by hammer‐driven devices. It is fast and economical, and can be used to obtain high quality samples from the B and C horizons.
