Fuelwood harvesting and chipping operations have increased over the last decade in the singleleaf pinyon ( Pinus monophylla Torr. and Frem.) forests of the Great Basin. Surface samples of mineral soil were taken in harvested and unharvested areas at six sites and analyzed for NO 3 ‐N; Kjeldahl‐N; exchangeable Ca, Mg, K; and extractable P, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Zn. Higher concentrations of nutrients were present in the mineral soils under trees 5 to 8 yr following harvest. Effects of harvest on K, Cu, Mn, and Fe, were site specific.
