Highlights of Activities in Division S‐8—Fertilizer Technology and Use

Subdivision S-4b, the forerunner to Div. S-8, was created in 1954 to fill the needs of industrial and university agronomists who were engaged in applied soil fertility research for crop production. In 1964 Subdiv. S-4b, "Plant Nutrients," was elevated to divisional status for a mandatory 2-year trial period and renamed Div. S-8, "Fertilizer Technology and Use." After completing the 2-year provisional period, Div. S8 received full divisional status in 1966. Serving on the committee recommending formation of Div. S-8 were T. J. Army, S. A. Barber, T. R. Cox, L. E. Ensminger, E. J. Kamprath, W. E. Martin, W. H. McVickar, W. L. Nelson, G. E. Smith, and J. W. Fitts, chair. The new division was assigned responsibilities for handling papers on manufacturing of fertilizer, fertilizer additives, coating techniques, new fertilizer compounds, fertilizer evaluation including laboratory, greenhouse, and field trials, and soil test analyses as related to fertilizer use. Interest in Div. S-8 decreased in the early 1970s and in 1972 the need for Div. S-8 was seriously questioned. Since that time, however, it has become firmly established.
