The fraction of aromatic carbon ( A C ) present in humic substances was reported to be determined by carbon magnetic resonance (CMR). A second method for determining A C is based on the weights of aromatic degradation products obtained by permanganate oxidation of humics. A correct method of computing A C from such data, not available so far, has been developed. A C values thus calculated are found to be much lower than those determined by CMR. The probable cause for such discrepency may be the presence of rings with low aromaticity, like furans, in the structure of humic substances.
