Maghemites (γ‐Fe 2 O 3 ) from highly weathered soils had unit cell parameters significantly lower than pure maghemites. This was due to Al for Fe substitution in the cubic structure. Al‐substituted maghemites were synthesized by heating soil and synthetic Al‐substituted goethites with sucrose and synthetic Al‐substituted magnetites. Formation of Al‐substituted maghemites in soils by fire is, therefore, postulated.
