Abstract Sufficient chlorite stability data are now available so as to permit initial consideration of chlorite equilibria in soils and sediments. Assuming a pH 4 SiO 4 of 3.1 and other conditions approximating the soil solution, stability diagrams indicate that high‐Mg varieties of chlorite and smectite should be stable under an oxidizing condition (pe + pH = 17.7) and should control Mg or Al, or both. Under a mildly reducing condition (pe + pH = 11.5), high Fe 2+ chlorites and probably smectites are predicted to dominate equilibria. The lack of rate information may be particularly restrictive considering the extremely low levels of Al anticipated.
