On the Measurement of Permanent Charge in Oxisols

It is shown that the method used recently by Tessens and Zauyah to measure net permanent charge in Oxisols, based on a recommendation by Gillman and Uehara, can be justified theoretically without an appeal to diffuse double‐layer theory, or to any other detailed, molecular model of the interfacial region. The mathematical relationship between permanent charge and the net adsorbed ion charge at the point of zero salt effect, which forms the basis of the Gillman‐Uehara method, can be derived solely from the law of surface charge balance under the assumption that the point of zero salt effect is equal to the point of zero net proton charge.
