The physical swelling of two illitic clays has been measured, at zero matric potential, in a series of organic solvents with different functional groups. The results show that a significant linear correlation exists between the observed swelling and the static dielectric constant of the liquid. This behavior is compared with the intracrystalline swelling of montmorillonite and is discussed in relation to the mechanism of swelling of clay systems.
