All horizons of two fragipan soils and one nonfragipan soil were extracted with a sodium citrate‐bicarbonate‐dithionite (CBD) reagent and 0.5 N NaOH. Both produced a maximum in extractable silicon (Si) in the fragipan horizon, but NaOH extracted about 10 to 40 times as much Si as did CBD. This Si appears to be a critical part of the fragipan, because in the nonfragipan soil, extractable Si shows no subsurface maximum at the depths in which fragipans occur.
