Abstract Runoff and soil erosion studies in farm fields in the Pacific Northwest require that borders for runoff and erosion plots be placed after all farm operations are finished just before the winter rainy season. Such an experimental procedure requires a portable, lightweight device to install borders, which are also portable and reusable. A border installation device was developed for easy portage into fields, and use without any vehicular traffic in the field. The device was drawn toward the field boundary using a pickup‐mounted winch. This border system performed as well as galvanized borders. Yet operational costs were less, portability was achieved, and field disturbance was minimal.
