In a field experiment, in situ soil solution samplers were compared for differences in ion concentration, volume of sample, and failure rate. Samples collected with small ceramic cups (2.2‐cm diam) had significantly higher K, Ca, Mg, and Na; those from hollow cellulose fibers had higher Ca, Mg, and Na; and those from fritted glass samplers had higher Na than did samples collected by large (4.8‐cm diam) ceramic cups. Initial intake rate differences among the large ceramic cups apparently did not affect solution concentrations. Volume of sample was higher and failure rates were lower for large ceramic samplers than for small ceramic, hollow cellulose fibers or for fritted glass samplers.
