Diagnosing the Sulfur Requirements of Corn and Wheat using Foliar Analysis

Beaufils' diagnosis and recommendation integrated system (DRIS) has been successfully applied in the past to the diagnosis of NPK imbalances in various crops. The DRIS approach utilizes indices that reflect the degree of nutrient imbalance by measuring the extent to which a particular nutrient deviates from the established norm. DRIS norms developed from a population of observations of leaf composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S for corn and N, P, K, and S for wheat) and corresponding yields are presented for corn ( Zea Mays L.) and wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.). Two 3 4 N, P, K, and S greenhouse factorial experiments with corn and wheat were set up to generate independent data against which the DRIS norms can be tested. Progressive diagnosis of the most limiting nutrient in a given situation and its subsequent correction have resulted in the highest yielding treatment combination being reached for both crops. Application of the DRIS norms to these data show that diagnoses that result in yield responses can be made.
