Inhibition of urease activity and of nitrification by potassium xanthates was measured by adding them to soil amended with urea or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and determining the urea remaining or nitrate produced after incubation at 23°C. The xanthates of unsubstituted alcohols of low molecular weight were the best inhibitors of urease and nitrification. The effectiveness of nitrification inhibition was not well correlated with the amounts of CS 2 evolved from soil treated with xanthates in sealed Conway units.
