The Tempe pressure cell, which is used in studies of moisture retention, was evaluated for the measurement of saturated hydraulic conductivities. By the simple addition of a groove and O‐ring, the pressure cell was altered so that it would hold a vacuum. This modification allowed for complete saturation of the soil cores and prevented the adverse effects of entrapped air on the saturated hydraulic conductivity measurement. The ability of the cell to function in its original purpose was not altered. The multiple use of this cell may allow for monetary savings in equipment purchases.
