Existing designs of thermal conductivity probes were modified in order to build a probe suitable for easy installation and recovery from shallow depths above or below the water table in unconsolidated deposits. The performance of the thermal conductivity probe described here was compared to a recent probe design with satisfactory results; it was also successfully tested in the field.
