The adsorption of Mn 2+ on two samples of powdered calcite with different surface areas has been studied using atomic absorption and electron spin resonance spectroscopy to investigate the solution and mineral phases. Chemisorption of Mn 2+ on CaCO 3 surfaces lowered the solubility of Mn 2+ below the level expected for MnCO 3 precipitation. At high levels of Mn 2+ in solution, after saturation of surface sites, nucleation at CaCO 3 surfaces seemed to occur, followed by slow precipitation of separate phase MnCO 3 . The preference of calcite for Mn 2+ relative to Ca 2+ decreased with increasing Mn 2+ absorption. The results indicate the importance of the surface area of the solid phase in determining the quantity of Mn 2+ adsorbed and the final solution concentration.
