The effect of C 2 H 2 on nitrification in soils was determined to evaluate the use of C 2 H 2 in field and laboratory denitrification studies. The presence of as little as 0.1% (vol/vol) C 2 H 2 completely inhibited nitrification. The effect of C 2 H 2 was reversible, but an 8‐ to 10‐day period was required before nitrification returned to the rate in the control. The results suggest that the C 2 H 2 approach must be limited to those experiments in which either only nitrate fertilizers are used or where nitrification is assumed complete before denitrification commences.
