Release of SO 4 from synthetic basaluminite and alunite was measured by plant uptake after mixing various rates of these compounds with Marvyn loamy sand at pH 6.5. The fraction of SO 4 released from basaluminite was about one‐half that from gypsum, according to S uptake by cotton plants. Alunite released very little SO 4 . Release of SO 4 by basaluminite in soil supports the thesis that SO 4 retention and desorption in acid soils can be explained in part by solubility of Al‐hydroxysulfates.
