Abstract Methods of determining water storage (W) in a tillage layer of changing height are analyzed to compare the effects of agrotechnical management on W . Changes in W may be evaluated from a single estimate of the solid mass per unit area at a state of reference and periodic observations of the gravimetric water content of the tillage layer, which is equivalent to the usual procedure in stable soils.
