The extent to which exchangeable calcium hydrolysis occurs during the preparation of homoionic calcium montmorillonite clay and the rate of the reaction in distilled water at various supension concentrations and levels of CO 2 was determined at 25°C. The rate and extent of hydrolysis was found to be comparable to that reported for sodium montmorillonite and increased with CO 2 concentration. CEC was appreciably reduced during washing of residual salts while preparing calcium montmorillonite. The mechanism of hydrolysis is discussed.
