A technique useful in laboratory soil columns which allows control of soil water content, regulation of the average composition of the soil atmosphere, and collection of leachate in variable increments is described. The design and construction of the system, as well as its advantages and disadvantages, are explained in detail and references are made to the adaptability of the technique to studies involving N transport and transformation, microbial populations, salinity, reduction‐oxidation reactions, or soil gas sampling.
