Compressional and shear wave velocities were measured in remolded cylindrical‐shaped soil materials from a Vertisol and two Oxisols. The modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, and bulk modulus were computed from measured sound velocities. Compressional wave velocity increased with increasing water content, shear wave velocity decreased with increasing water content and both velocities increased with increasing soil density. The Vertisol with a high content of swelling clay underwent greater change in modulus of elasticity and shear modulus for a given change in water content than the Oxisols.
