A new method of measuring shrink‐swell potential of soil was developed using < 2‐mm sieved soil. Results obtained by this method were significantly correlated with COLE determined on natural soil clods ( p < 0.001, r 2 = 0.83). The new method is fast, requires little equipment, and should be a valuable test of shrink‐swell potential when clods cannot be obtained or when equipment for measuring COLE by the standard method is not available.
