Nitrate adsorption by several soils was determined as the difference between the NO 3 ‐ added and that remaining in the supernatant liquid. A nitrate ion electrode method, which was checked against a phenoldisulfonic method, was used to determine the NO 3 ‐ remaining in the supernatant liquid. The time required for equilibrations was 16 hours. The amount of NO 3 ‐ adsorbed varied from 1.2 to 7.5 meq/100 g of soil from a 0.05 M NO 3 ‐ solution for soils of pH values ranging from 5.3 to 6.1. The amount adsorbed increased with decreasing pH.
