The dynamics of ion transport during periods of moisture flow from the forest floor was studied using automated equipment in a second‐growth Douglas‐fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) forest in western Washington. This transport process was related to the environmental parameters of temperature in the forest floor, the duration of time before flow, and the amount of moisture flow. Seasonal climatic changes are related to the ion transport process, and changes in solution concentration during a few representative wetting cycles are also presented. The results provide a base for predicting possible effects of manipulating natural forest ecosystems. A warning is given of the possible effects of some common forest‐management practices.
