A SnCl 2 ‐I 2 reductometric titration method gave values of 4.2 and 3.5 meq quinoid carbonyls/g in a soil fulvic (FA) and humic acid, respectively. The results were supported by the analysis of a mixture of the FA and a napthaquinone, and were in agreement with earlier enzymatic and infrared studies of the soil humic compound. No reduction of the nonquinoid carbonyl of benzophenone by SnCl 2 was observed.
