The relationship between soil moisture tension and nitrate accumulation in a Drummer silty clay loam was found to differ very little from previously studied silt loams. In the silty clay loam the rates of NO 3 ‐ accumulation were 63, 51, 40, 10, and 14% as great at soil moisture tensions of ⅓, ½, 1, 5, and 15 bar, respectively, as at ½0 and 1/10 bar. The rates of NO 3 ‐ accumulation in the silt loams were 71, 53, 29, and 13% as great at ⅓, 1, 5, and 15 bar, respectively, as at 1/10 bar soil moisture tension. At all tensions except 15 bar the mean relative rates of NO 3 ‐ −N accumulation (moisture rate indexes − R M values) are slightly lower for the silty clay loam than for the silt loams.
