Over a 30‐year period, when the application of N fertilizer to three irrigated areas adjacent to the Upper Rio Grande increased from a very low to a high level, the overall NO 3 ‐N concentration of the river did not increase, indicating no significant stream pollution by NO 3 ‐N from applied N fertilizer.
