Analysis of the system of a plant root taking up ions at a constant rate shows that the apparent diffusion coefficient of each ion can change with time, distance from the root, composition of the solution, and the rates of uptake of all the ions. A numerical method, developed to include the electrical interaction of ions during diffusion, was used to simulate the concentration behavior in a sand culture. It is concluded that the assumption of constant diffusion coefficients in models of soil‐plant system can only be a first approximation.
