An equation is derived for mixed potentials of electrodes which explains their non‐Nernstian behavior in dilute solutions and at nonequilibrium conditions. Adding iron(II) sulfate to soil suspensions resulted in E Pt /pH slopes which were unrelated to the reaction taking place because E Pt is a mixed potential and because the pH is governed to a significant extent by non‐redox reactions.
