A procedure is described which reduces the possibility of chemical alteration of soil organic matter during extraction, and which permits recovery of most of the solubilized organic matter as an acid‐insoluble material low in ash. The essential features of the method are: (i) destruction of hydrated silicate minerals by pretreatment of the soil with 0.3 N HF, (ii) recovery of organic matter by extraction first with 0.02 M Na 4 P 2 O 7 and then with 0.03 N NaOH, and (iii) removal of inorganic contaminants by dialysis against 0.3 N HF.
