The presence of CO 2 increased and stabilized the effective retention of ammonia, applied as aqua ammonia, by base‐saturated clays. Ca 2+ ‐ and Mg 2+ ‐bentonites particularly showed a striking increase in the retention of ammonia in the presence of CO 2 . It is postulated that the Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ exchanged by ammonia, are precipitated as highly insoluble compounds thus stabilizing the retention of chemisorbed ammonia.
