The uptake of nonexchangeable K by alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) from samples of the surface layers of 8 Nebraska soils in a greenhouse experiment was more closely related to illite contributed to the soils by fine silt ( r = 0.85) than to K‐bearing minerals contributed to the soils by other separates. Measurements of exchangeable K may underestimate the K‐supplying power of Nebraska soils for alfalfa when relatively large amounts of illite are contributed to the soils by fine silt.
