Abstract The equilibrium exchange of Na, K, and Ca with Al in Wyoming bentonite suspensions was studied at external salt concentrations of 0.05 and 1.0 n . The exchange equilibria, at both concentrations, followed the simple equivalent fraction exchange equation within experimental error with the three pairs of ions. It was also found that concentrations could be used to calculate the exchange distribution. The marked effects of concentration on the relative replacing power of monovalent and divalent cations for trivalent Al was shown to result from the exchange distribution and the values of the exchange coefficients. The utility of the exchange equation for predicting conditions necessary for the extraction of exchangeable cations was also demonstrated.
