Changes in weight, thickness, and distribution of litter were observed in forest stands of Wisconsin. The study included manipulations of litter over 5 years. Observations disclosed the influence of casting and midden‐building activities of earthworms on the course and the rate of development of the coprogenous A1 horizon of forested soils.
