In interpreting the experimentally observed interaction between anions and clays two aspects should be recognized, viz, ( 1 ) the negative adsorption of anions by negatively charged sites, and ( 2 ) the positive adsorption on other sites (probably the edges). A generalized equation was developed describing the contribution of the negative adsorption. With regard to experimental methods the need of the use of radionuclides to detect small quantities of positive adsorption is discussed. Data obtained support the applicability of the derived equation to montmorillonite systems and indicate that a small amount of positive adsorption of SO 4 2‐ is present.
