The Frenkel‐Halsey‐Hill isotherm equation for multilayer adsorption was applied to water adsorption by various monoionic kaolinites at 10.0°C. The FHH Equation described water adsorption over a wide P/P 0 range in all systems. Li‐kaolinite showed no evidence of ion hydration or capillary condensation up to P/P o = 0.972 and was used to calculate free water adsorption in terms of statistical layers, n. The calculated multilayer adsorption isotherm for water was identical for Li‐, Ca‐, Ba‐, and Al‐kaolinites. The same isotherm also described water adsorption by Na‐kaolinites up to P/P o = 0.9 where ion hydration was initiated. A definite effect on the parameters of the FHH equation was found as the nature of the substrate surface was varied when water is used as the adsorbate.
