In a study of 15 organic soils the reduction in phosphorus concentration in aqueous solutions shaken with the soils gave a good indication of their phosphorus fixation capacities. An equally good indicator in soils that had had prior phosphorus fertilization was the level of water‐extractable phosphorus. Total iron, aluminum, calcium, and phosphorus content of the soils did not relate significantly to phosphorus fixation capacity.
