An experimental investigation of the applicability of the diffusion equation to soil water movement is reported using soils and sandstone with water and oil. The fluids were allowed to enter at different negative pressures into air‐dry horizontal columns of several lengths. The equation predicted the water movement when the entry pressure was −2 millibars. The inability of the equation to predict water movement for greater negative pressures is discussed.
