Four different types of tensiometers were compared and found to be quite similar within their range of measurement. Only a slight difference in range was found between the instruments. Moisture desorption curves obtained by plotting tensiometer readings versus soil water content as obtained by sampling were different from those obtained by the porous plate apparatus using cores or disturbed samples. The differences are associated with structural changes resulting from the procesures used in the porous plate technique. The moisture desorption curves obtained with the tensiometers should be reliable if time lag and hysteresis effects are small.
