A rapid, accurate flame photometric method was devised for determination of Ca and Mg in plant tissue. Interferences by P and any Fe and Al that might be present were eliminated by addition of FeCl 3 to the acid plant ash extract and precipitation of P, Fe and Al by neutralizing to pH 5.6 with NH 4 OH. A positive interference by K was corrected by addition of 500 ppm. K to all solutions. NH 4 OAc was added to prevent clogging of the burner capillary by the NH 4 Cl solution. Results obtained with the new method agreed well with those obtained with AOAC methods.
